I think our readers can agree—right now, things are feeling pretty bleak on a macro level.
Lot’s of collective trauma & uncertainty literally every day.
And one way to help cope is escapism via entertainment like watching mind-bending Netflix show, Black Mirror.
So to that point…
Is Black Mirror even unsettling anymore—or just relatable?
Is life just one extended episode now?
I remember when the first episode came out back in… what feels like lifetimes ago... The first episode was about the politician and the blackmail involving a pig. You can do you own deep dive on that particular episode bc no thanks.
Anyway, I was TRAUMATIZED - straight up couldn’t believe this was allowed on TV.
And it was just like a mindf*** - not even that graphic on screen.
I think that’s why Black Mirror was such a game-changer. It could really put the thought of *omg this COULD potentially happen in the darkest of scenarios but lol good thing we are safe here in our real world, right? *
But now I feel like we’re living in that darkest scenario simulation.
I’ve only watched one new season episode, “Eulogy” - which, as you probably guessed, focuses on AI. Overall the ep was great (Here’s Netflix’s summary / take if you want the dets).
#nospoilers but I appreciated how when interviewed, Paul Giamatti, the main actor in the episode, touched on the fact that AI can provide positive functions for human lives too.
I assumed Black Mirror would be all doom & gloom about AI forever & ever because that’s what it used to be. But nah, it was refreshing to see, which I never thought I’d say about a Black Mirror episode.
Maybe next season they’ll just go full circle and become rom-coms, because that seems almost as unbelievable to me now as the OG Black Mirror concepts (FROM BACK IN 2011, OMGOMGOMG so much global trauma has happened since then!).
Anyway, if you’d like a break from the real world but still want to feel like you’re in a similar parallel timeline which is still dark, go check out “Eulogy” on Netflix now.
*to clarify, this post was not sponsored by Netflix, just darkness*
Until next time, fellow humans.
